Burringbar Street is the clearest flood evidence anywhere in the Illawarra. Wollongong City Council names it as having experienced repeated flooding, and records that many high-risk properties there have been purchased through a voluntary acquisition program running since the early 1990s. Thirty years of a council buying and removing houses from one street is not a drainage nuisance, it is a documented, sustained risk. If you own near it, that history should shape what you spend on stormwater and where you put your hot water unit, switchboard and floor levels.

Dapto floods two different ways, and only one of them is rain. The suburb sits in the Mullet Creek catchment, and the current document is the Mullet Creek Floodplain Risk Management Study and Plan of May 2023, which superseded the 2018 model update and the 2010 Mullet and Brooks Creeks studies. On top of the flash flooding you would expect, the NSW SES specifically identifies lake backwater effects from Lake Illawarra's tidal entrance as a Dapto flood mechanism. That means the creek can back up because the lake is high, not because it is raining on you. Non-return valves and correct surcharge gully heights matter more here than they do further up the hill.

Dapto is on the lake, not the ocean, and that changes the maintenance schedule. The suburb sits on Lake Illawarra's western shore, so the exposure is estuarine rather than marine. We do not push the aggressive salt-corrosion replacement cycle here that we would at Shell Cove or Bulli, because it would be selling you something the environment does not justify. What does matter on low-lying lakeside land is groundwater, sub-floor moisture and the behaviour of absorption drainage when the water table is already high.

The Dapto suburb is mid-century stock, whatever the new estates over the ridge suggest. This is worth being precise about, because it changes the diagnosis. West Dapto's large-scale development began in 1989 after a 1987 strategic plan, but that growth sits in Horsley, Brownsville and Kembla Grange, which are separate suburbs. Dapto proper grew around the 1887 railway and the dairy industry that followed, with its schools built between 1958 and 1969 and the TAFE campus in 1975. That is why we still find galvanised steel supply lines, early copper and vitrified clay sewer with root intrusion in Dapto houses, and PEX and PVC two kilometres west in Horsley.

There was a smelting works on Kanahooka Road. It opened around 1899, employed about five hundred men treating ores from several regions, and closed in 1905 when the ore ran short. A heavy industrial site on the lake shore over a century ago is worth knowing about if you are excavating on the eastern side of the suburb, in the same way the coke works history matters at Corrimal. We are not claiming your block is contaminated, only that on older industrial land it is worth asking the question before you dig rather than after.

Dapto is not in a mine subsidence district. Subsidence Advisory NSW declares 29 districts across the state and none of them cover Wollongong LGA. It comes up because of the region's mining history, but it does not apply to your property here.
