Same-Day Blocked Drain Clearing

Blocked Drain Clearing in Illawarra

Professional blocked drain clearing and blocked drain services across Wollongong, Kiama, Shellharbour and the greater Illawarra region. CCTV inspections, high-pressure hydro jetting and tree root removal by licensed plumbers.

Blocked drain clearing is a plumbing service that removes blockages and build-up from household and commercial drainage systems using mechanical or high-pressure water methods. In Illawarra, blocked drain clearing costs between $150-$450 depending on the technique used. An electric eel clears simple blockages for $150-$250, while hydro jetting — which uses water pressure up to 5,000 PSI to scour pipe walls — costs $250-$450 and is the most effective method for grease, silt and tree root intrusion. CCTV drain inspection ($150-$300) uses a waterproof camera to locate the exact blockage point and assess pipe condition without excavation. Tree root intrusion is the most common cause of sewer blockages in Illawarra, particularly in suburbs with older clay pipe systems. We also provide strata blocked drain clearing and sewer maintenance across apartment blocks throughout Wollongong, Kiama and Shellharbour.

Our Methods

Advanced Blocked Drain Clearing Technology

We use professional-grade equipment to clear any blockage and diagnose underlying drainage problems accurately.

High-Pressure Hydro Jetting

Water pressure up to 5,000 PSI blasts through grease, silt, scale and tree roots. The most effective method for restoring full drain flow without damaging pipes.

CCTV Drain Inspection

Waterproof cameras inserted into your drains provide real-time video of blockages, cracks, tree root entry points and pipe condition. Eliminates guesswork.

Tree Root Removal

Mechanical root cutting and hydro jetting removes invasive tree roots from sewer and stormwater pipes. We identify entry points and recommend long-term prevention.

Electric Eel Clearing

Rotating steel cable with cutting head breaks through soft blockages including toilet paper, grease and hair build-up. Fast and cost-effective for simple clogs.

Emergency Drain Clearing

Overflowing drains can't wait. Our 24/7 emergency service provides rapid response across Illawarra to stop sewage overflow and prevent property damage.

Preventive Drain Maintenance

Scheduled blocked drain clearing prevents blockages before they happen. Ideal for properties with large trees, older pipes or commercial kitchens with heavy grease output.

Common Issues

What Causes Blocked Drains?

Understanding the root cause helps us apply the right solution the first time and prevent recurring problems.

Tree Root Intrusion

Roots from fig trees, willows, bamboo and other species enter through pipe joints seeking moisture. They expand inside the pipe, trapping debris and eventually causing complete blockage.

Warning Signs:

  • Gurgling sounds in drains
  • Slow draining across multiple fixtures
  • Recurring blockages in same location
  • Lush patches of grass over drain lines
Typical Cost to Clear$300-$600

Grease & Fat Build-up

Cooking oils and fats solidify inside drain pipes, gradually narrowing the bore until water can no longer flow. Kitchen drains are most affected, particularly in homes without grease traps.

Warning Signs:

  • Slow kitchen sink drainage
  • Foul odours from kitchen drain
  • Water backing up when dishwasher runs
  • Gurgling sounds from sink
Typical Cost to Clear$150-$350

Foreign Object Blockage

Items flushed down toilets or dropped into drains — sanitary products, wet wipes, children's toys, hair ties — create obstructions that trap further debris and cause rapid blockage.

Warning Signs:

  • Sudden complete blockage
  • Toilet overflowing
  • Single fixture affected
  • Water won't drain at all
Typical Cost to Clear$150-$300

Broken or Collapsed Pipes

Ageing clay or concrete pipes crack, sag or collapse over time, especially under driveways and in reactive clay soils common across Illawarra. Ground movement and tree roots accelerate damage.

Warning Signs:

  • Persistent sinkholes in yard
  • Sewage odour outside
  • Multiple recurring blockages
  • Rats or cockroaches appearing
Typical Cost to Clear$500-$3,000+

What clearing a blocked drain costs

Published 2026 ranges for NSW. Where a job needs root cutting and then jetting, expect the higher band — and see the note below on why the two methods are rarely priced separately.

JobTypical rangeWhat affects it
Blocked sink or basin$150 – $300Usually cleared on the first visit.
Blocked toilet$180 – $350Higher if the pan has to come up.
Blocked main sewer line$300 – $800+Depends on access, depth and cause.
Jet rodding (hydro jetting)$250 – $800High-pressure water. Clears grease, silt and fine roots.
Root cutting plus jet rodding$400 – $1,500Mechanical cutter first, then jetting to flush the debris.
CCTV drain camera inspection$250 – $550Often credited toward the repair if you proceed. Sources range $150–$750.

These are typical price ranges for the Illawarra and NSW, drawn from published 2026 industry pricing data — not a quote, and not our fixed prices. What your job actually costs depends on access, the age and condition of the plumbing, parts, and whether it is after hours. We give you a fixed price before we start work, so you are never guessing. Blockage, or broken pipe?

This is the question worth answering before you spend anything substantial. A one-off blockage clears and stays clear. A recurring one in the same spot is telling you the pipe has a defect.

Electric eel or jet rodding? Usually both

People often ring asking for one or the other. In practice the two do different jobs and most root work uses both, which is why you will rarely see them quoted as two clean prices.

Electric eel

A mechanical cutter on a flexible cable. It punches through an obstruction and cuts roots. Fast, effective at restoring flow, and usually the first tool out of the van for a straightforward blockage.

Jet rodding, also called hydro jetting

High-pressure water that scours the pipe wall rather than boring a hole through the blockage. It is what clears grease, silt and fine root hair, and it leaves the line genuinely clean instead of temporarily open.

Why it is usually both

On a root job the cutter goes through first, then the jetter flushes the debris out. Charging for “an eel” or “a jetter” as though they were alternatives misrepresents the work. We price the job.

And why CCTV changes the conversation

A drain camera answers the blockage-versus-defect question in about twenty minutes. If the pipe is sound, you have bought certainty. If it is not, you can see the crack, the sag or the root intrusion on the screen and decide on evidence rather than on somebody’s opinion. Where we do the repair, the inspection fee generally comes off it.

What blocks drains around here specifically

  • Tree roots in older clay lines. Very common across the older Wollongong suburbs and anywhere with established street trees.
  • Sagged runs on low ground. Minnamurra sits at about seven metres elevation and a lot of drainage there runs at minimal fall, so solids settle instead of being carried away. Clearing it works; it comes back.
  • Abandoned septic-era lines. Gerringong and Gerroa were unsewered until 2001–02, so older properties still have decommissioned tanks and disused drainage in the yard. Worth locating before you excavate.
  • Ground movement after heavy rain. The escarpment side of the Illawarra moves, and buried pipe does not flex.
  • Wipes. Including the ones sold as flushable. They are not.

Before you call

Check whether it is one fixture or all of them. A single slow basin is local. Every fixture backing up, or a gully overflowing outside, means the main line — stop using water and call, because the next flush has to go somewhere.

And skip the supermarket drain cleaner on anything serious. It rarely shifts roots or a solid obstruction, and it means whoever opens that drain is working in caustic water. If you have already used some, tell us when you call.
