Published 2026 ranges, before rebates. Sources disagree noticeably on heat pumps, so these ranges span them. Heat pumps replacing electric attract the NSW discount of up to $640 plus federal certificates on top, quoted per job because the actual amount varies.

Sizing it for the household you have now

The most common mistake in a like-for-like replacement is fitting the same size again. Tanks get sized for the household a house was built for, not the one living in it. That is particularly common in family suburbs like Kiama Downs, where a lot of 1980s stock is still on its original sizing.

On a controlled load tariff, size up. The tank has to carry a full day because the element only runs overnight. Continuous flow systems are sized by flow rate rather than volume, so the question becomes how many outlets can run at once.

What the install actually involves

A straightforward like-for-like replacement is usually three to six hours. Changing type — electric to heat pump, or storage to continuous flow — takes longer because the connections, the base and often the location change. Gas work requires a licensed gas fitter and a compliance certificate. We hold both licences, so a hot water changeover with a gas connection is one trade and one visit rather than two.

The rebates, honestly

Replacing an electric storage system with a heat pump attracts two incentives that stack: the NSW Energy Savings Scheme, published as up to $640, and federal Small-scale Technology Certificates on top. Replacing gas rather than electric, the NSW side drops to up to $330. Treat “up to” literally, because NSW calls those figures indicative and the real discount varies with the installer, the location, the model and the complexity of the job. We calculate yours on the actual model and put it in the quote, with the mandatory $200 ex GST co-payment shown as a separate line.

Two things worth knowing. The NSW incentive is applied as a discount at the point of sale, not claimed back later. And the scheme requires a minimum customer co-payment of $200 excluding GST per unit, which means a compliant heat pump upgrade can never legitimately be advertised as free. If someone is offering you a $0 heat pump, ask how they are handling the mandatory co-payment and get the answer in writing.

Also worth knowing: the federal component shrinks every 1 January as the deeming period steps down. It will not be better next year. Full rebate detail here.

If the sums do not favour a heat pump for your situation — and replacing gas rather than electric, they often do not — we will say so rather than pushing the system with the biggest rebate attached.
