Five system types, five very different price tags, and a set of rebates that changes the maths considerably on one of them. Here is what each actually costs installed, what it costs to run, and how long it should last.
These are typical price ranges for the Illawarra and NSW, drawn from published 2026 industry pricing data — not a quote, and not our fixed prices. What your job actually costs depends on access, the age and condition of the plumbing, parts, and whether it is after hours. We give you a fixed price before we start work, so you are never guessing.
Hot water is the biggest single plumbing purchase most households make, and it is usually made in a hurry — the system fails, there is no hot water, and a decision gets made in an afternoon. It is worth ten minutes of reading beforehand, because the difference between the cheapest and the best-value option over ten years is thousands of dollars.
The figures below are before any rebate. That matters most for heat pumps, which look expensive here and considerably less so once the NSW and federal incentives come off.

Replacing an electric storage system with a heat pump in the Illawarra attracts two separate incentives that stack: the NSW Energy Savings Scheme, and federal Small-scale Technology Certificates. Together they take a substantial amount off the figures in the table above, which are all before incentives.
NSW publishes its side as up to $640 replacing an electric system and up to $330 replacing gas. Read “up to” literally: NSW calls those figures indicative only, and the real discount moves with the installer, your location, the model, how complex the install is and the compliance costs. The federal certificates are separate again and depend on the model and the certificate market. We calculate both on your actual job and put them in writing rather than advertising a headline number.
Two things to know. First, the NSW incentive is applied as a discount at the point of sale, not claimed back later. Second, the scheme requires you to pay a minimum co-payment of $200 excluding GST ($220 including GST) per unit — which means a compliant heat pump upgrade can never legitimately be advertised as free. If someone is offering you a $0 heat pump, something is wrong with the offer.

Gas storage and continuous flow need natural gas or LPG. Continuous flow never runs out, which suits unpredictable households, and it lasts the longest of the gas options. Much of the Kiama hinterland and rural Berry runs bottled LPG rather than reticulated gas, which changes the running-cost calculation.
Heat pumps have the lowest running cost and the best incentives, but they need outdoor space and airflow, and they make some noise. They are the clear pick when replacing electric storage in a house with somewhere sensible to put the unit.
Solar has the longest panel life and attracts STCs, but not the NSW heat pump incentive. Roof orientation and shading decide whether it stacks up, and on heritage-listed properties in Berry's conservation areas, panel placement can involve consent considerations.
Salt air is hard on hot water systems. Casings, fittings, valves and pipework all corrode faster within a few hundred metres of surf, and properties at Gerroa, Minnamurra, Werri Beach and along Jones Beach consistently sit at the short end of the expected-life ranges above. If you are buying a system for a coastal Illawarra house, it is worth asking about the warranty terms and the casing material rather than buying on price alone. An annual check catches corrosion while it is still a service item.
Before you call anyone, two quick checks. On an electric system, look at your switchboard for a tripped breaker. On a gas system, check whether the pilot light is out. Those two account for a good share of the calls we get, and both are free to check.

Electric storage 8 to 12 years, gas storage 10 to 15, gas continuous flow 15 to 20, heat pump 10 to 15, and solar 15 to 20 for the panels with 8 to 12 for the tank. Coastal properties in Gerroa, Minnamurra, Werri Beach and along Jones Beach sit at the short end of those ranges, because salt air corrodes casings and fittings faster.
Repair generally makes sense if the unit is under about eight years old for electric or ten for gas, the tank itself is structurally sound, and the fault is a component — a thermostat, element, tempering valve, anode or gas valve. Replace when the tank is leaking from the body rather than a fitting, when the system is past its expected life, or when the repair would cost more than about half a new system. It depends on people and habits more than house size. As a rough guide, a 125 to 160 litre storage tank suits one or two people, 250 litres suits three or four, and 315 litres and up suits five or more. Continuous flow systems are sized by flow rate rather than volume. A common mistake in family suburbs like Kiama Downs is replacing like-for-like with a tank that was sized for the household the house was built for, not the one living in it now.
